Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), Region VI, Hurricane Katrina Orphaned Container Program, LA

 

In response to Hurricane Katrina, Summit, under contract to E&E, supported EPA in its emergency response role as outlined in National Response Plan Emergency Support Function (ESF 10) Oil and Hazardous Materials Response.  The goal of the operation was to collect, classify, and consolidate Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and recover other orphan containers disoriented during Hurricane Katrina.  To achieve this goal, two primary operations were conducted; field operations to collect and transport the waste, and classification and consolidation of the waste at key staging areas.

The scope of services included:

  • Preparing and reviewing documentation related to environmental statutes
  • Characterizing contaminated sites and waste streams
  • Providing health and safety support
  • Conducting stakeholder outreach activities
  • Managing hazardous and/or radioactive waste

 

Field operations consisted of working with the general public, operations planning, and detection and collection of waste.
